Kids Camp Day 1: Monday - 7/18/16

Hello all! I am so sorry that we haven't been updating the blog daily. I have every intention of doing so but never remember in the free time that we do have. Being at camp with 28 8-12 year olds, is rewarding but completely exhausting, and I was more than ready for bed at the end of the day. We will try to be more diligent next week, but the teens are probably going to be more exhausting. Haha. I am not prepared to stay up till 2 in the morning. Dan has internet in Laz, but we didn't spend any time on it. I am actually really impressed by the fact that no one asked to spend time on the internet. I am proud of everyone for engaging with everyone around them. I think they are really trying to get the most out of this trip, and I am really proud of all of them.

Our flights went well. Actually this was probably the smoothest trip I've had coming here. There was only a minor scissors incident in the Paris airport. Our flight actually ended up being shorter than expected. One of our bags was left at the Budapest airport. Please pray we can get it back as it has been difficult to do so.

Thank you so much for your prayers and for making it possible for us to come. We had a great week at camp with the kids and are looking forward to next week with the teens. Please pray for unity among their teenagers and ours and friendships that can last a lifetime. Pray for God to move in the hearts of the teens this week in Laz and be transformed by His presence this week.

Monday Morning was pretty easy going, most of our team didn't wake up until about 11:30. We were so thankful that Dan and Maria let us sleep in because the plane ride kicked our butts with all of the time changes. We were extra tired because our 4 hour car ride turned into a 5 and a half hour car ride. After we all woke up and showered we hung out with the Hurrelbrink kids for a while. We played some foursquare and then Maria asked Abby and I if we wanted to go into town with her. Abby and I went to town and got supplies for crafts we were going to do with the kids at camp, and we got to exchange our money. Experiencing a money change was pretty cool, and their Lei are waxy so they feel cool. After we got back from town we packed up the vans and headed to Laz to meet Dan and the other missions group that had gone earlier that morning to clean up the last few things at the camp. It took about 25 minutes to get to Laz, and WOW are the views on the way there beautiful! All of the land seemed so flat, but on the way to Laz it into mountains and beautiful fields. When we got to the camp we unloaded and helped clean the last few things then moved into our bunks. I roomed with Abigail and Hannah was in the room connected to ours. Everyone else was put in other rooms. When we came out of our rooms, Dan took us on a tour of the grounds they owned in Laz. They currently own 3 houses in Laz. The main house is Maria's homestead and they renovated it back to normal and then built to dorms next to the orchard, for the campers. They also own the house across the street, they hope to make it into a place for couples to stay at so they have some time away from the kids they work with at camp. There is also a big place out back of this house that we used for soccer. The last house they own they recently bought, and it's beside the first house. The plans for this house is to turn it into a cafeteria so that they can actually be classified as a camp, not just someone's house. The last piece of land they currently own is a beautiful field that overlooks the valley below the town of Laz, along with all of the surrounding mountains. When we came back from our tour the kids started arriving. It was awkward at first but they warmed up to us quickly. It also proved to be very hard because of the language barrier and a lot of them don't know any English. We got the campers to their rooms and helped them get settled in. Abby and I had three girls in our room, their names were Christina, Stefana, and Maria. After unpacking we went to the big room to start praise and worship. Praise and worship was AMAZING. Immediately God's presence could be felt and these kids knew it. These kids were only 8-12 years old, but they praised God with an intensity that I have never seen! I am so grateful that I got to watch these kids worship all week long. I learned so much about worship from these kids, and will never forget the experiences I had while worshipping with these kids in Laz. After worship Gailen and Becky from the other missions group talked. Gailen spoke about how God will never leave you, no matter what. Becky spoke about the story of the prodigal son, but told it as a children's story, so it was more on their level. After chapel we started to play a few games we split the kids up into teams and each of us were leaders of their teams. When the teams had been split we gave them flags to decorate with the team name they had made up. I was a leader of the green team with Jacqueline, the Hurrelbrink's second oldest child, and we were the Leprechaun's. We also made up team cheers. We were judged and given points for the things we did. Then we cleaned up and headed to bed. The kids took a while to calm down, but they eventually did and everyone was asleep around 11pm. Overall Monday was a really good first day, and it made me really excited for the rest of the week!
